High Contrast Marking on Stainless Steel using Chemical Etching

One of the most common materials to Electro-Chemically Etch is Stainless Steels. It’s used for so many products from Medial Appliances and Food Preparation Equipment to Pressure Vessels and Nuclear Hardware etc.
One of the things we are asked for most often is how to create a high contrast BLACK permanent image on Stainless. Well for a very long time it’s been quite easy to get a good high contrast marking on Stainless steel and there are many Electrolytic Solutions that can help you obtain these results. However, Millennium Signatures X4R-428 Electrolyte Solution is unique in this area. Unlike the brown coloured markings, you tend to get with other formulations, our X4R-428 Electrolyte delivers a Black result that has definitely impressed those who have long been searching for a better result in this area. For the best Electro-Chemical Etch results on Titanium, use Millennium Signatures Electrolyte Formulation
X4R-416 at a Medium to High Power Setting in the DC Output Mode on most Power Units. A good Deep Etch Power Unit is ideal for optimal results. Getting a high contrast light surface mark on Titanium can be challenging, if your specs will accommodate, it’s actually easier to get a very sharp crisp marking by etching down a couple thousandths of an inch (0.002”) or 0.051mm which is easily achieved with a few very quick, light applications of the hand marker as not to generate too much heat. 
Give the surface a very quick light scuff with a Scotch Brito abrasive type pad and you should have a beautiful, razor sharp, high contrast etch which is often easily mistaken for a laser quality marking.

Remember:
Remember to keep your Monopad very damp with the X4R-416 Electrolyte Formulation, but not dripping all over your part and workstation. Too much heat can be the enemy when marking most metals, this is especially true when marking Titanium.
Use Standard Neutralizer or our Extra Strength X4R-900 Neutralizer to thoroughly clean the areas that came in contact with the electrolyte. 
Results may vary slightly when using different grades of Titanium, but these tips typically serve well on all Titanium Etching Applications. A good ground connection in close proximity to the area you’re marking is always important.
